I stuck to my guns and didn’t give my daughter a cell phone till she was 15,I was going to give it to her when she was 16,but school and sports became a conflict.How are we suppose to know when to give them one.I didn’t get one till I was 18 and could pay for it by myself.She loved it though and is very grateful for it.I’m glad she doesn’t take to much advantage of it!

Give a Gift – Just Because

Gift giving is not only for birthdays and holidays. Giving a gift “just because” can say so much about how you feel.This is not just for romantical feelings, this can be for a family member or friend as well.

Remember, the cost of the gift does not measure the importance. It’s the giving that makes the gift a special expression of your feelings. There are many low cost or free ways to let someone know how you feel about them and that you appreciate them.

Think about the person and what they like – giving them something completely out of the blue not only makes them feel good, you will feel good too.

Valentine’s Day Gift Etiquette – You’ve Been Together For a Few Months

If you’ve been dating for a few months, chances are the expectation for a decent Valentine’s day gift is going to be pretty high. However, that isn’t always the case.

To find out, simply mention that since valentine’s day is coming up, you thought it would be nice to plan something for that day. How the person reacts to the idea of spending Valentine’s Day together is a good litmus test for a budding relationship. It may be an important occasion for your sweetie …or it may be perceived as just another commercial holiday – Just another day on the calendar. If your opinions differ, try to compromise out of respect for each other.

As for a gift, give something meaningful but not inappropriately extravagant. Giving a gift that the two of you can enjoy together — tickets to an event, a night away together — can guarantee more shared good times ahead.

Valentine’s Day Gift Etiquette – When You Just Met

So, you’ve just met someone you are really beginning to like and valentine’s Day is right around the corner! What do you do? What kind of gift should you get, or should you even get a gift at all?

It’s pretty unrealistic to expect a big, romantic celebration at this stage of the game. It’s fine to maybe plan to do something for that day, such as dinner or a movie but don’t be to bummed out of the other person doesn’t seem to receptive. Maybe they have already made plans, or maybe they just aren’t ready to be with someone on Valentine’s Day, since the day comes with a lot of expectations.

However, if you do get together for that day, what about a gift? The best thing to do is give something small. Don’t give a gift with the expectation of receiving one in return. Be prepared for the fact that the other person may not have thought to get you something , not because they don’t like you but because situations such as these can be awkwards and it’s possibe they just did’t know if they should get you a gift or not.

What’s Their Archetype?

Buying gifts can be stressful unless you REALLY know the person and have a good idea already of what they need or what they want. If you don’t have a clue, take a look at their archetype.

An ‘archetype’ is an original model of a person, ideal example, or a prototype after which others are copied, patterned, or emulated; a symbol universally recognized by all. In psychology, an archetype is a model of a person, personality, or behavior. Source: Wikipedia

The next few entries will give a fglimpse into the most common archetypes. Once you have a basic understanding of them, you will be able to find gifts for someone based on their archetype!

Buying a Gift for the Person Who Has it All

For the person that has it all or the person who feels impossible to shop for, consider gift certificates or gift cards to their favorite store or favorite restaurant.

Not just a basic gift card though. If you know they love a store at the local mall, avoid getting them a ‘Mall gift certificate’ and instead get them a gift certificate or gift card to the particular store they love.
It’s the specificity of the gift that makes it special, so knowing where the person likes to shop or eat, is what makes the gift special.

How to Buy Clothing as a Gift

Let’s face it, buying clothing as a gift is one of the most difficult things to do. This is a big reason why so many people opt for a gift card to give. While gift cards can be an excellent choice, it’s even better when you can buy something perfect that you know they’ll love!

Most importantly, you must know the person’s style. Ask where they shop, what their favorite colors are and take notice of their wardrobe. Make sure to consider what colors and styles are flattering for them. Find out what their size is.

Remember, do not buy something YOU think looks good or is fashionable. Buy something you know they’ll love and wear.

Donate!

The big day may be over but this is still a good time to make a donation to those less fortunate than yourself.

If you donate them to a non-profit charity like Goodwill or the Salvation Army, it’s also a good idea to get a receipt, because you can deduct the value of the donation when you do your taxes. Take some time to:

* Go through your closets, and drawers to look for clothes you no longer wear.
* Get your kids involved and find toys they’re no longer interested in.
* Clean out your basement, garage, and storage areas.

While you are going through this process, you may even find some valuable items you are no longer using that you could sell on EBay or through your community newspaper, like the Penny Saver or Thrifty Nickel, to make some extra money!

Give the Gift of Time – Your Time

Not so great at picking out gifts? Just didn’t have extra money to spend on buying gifts? Maybe you’re not very talented and making a gift was out of the question? Don’t fret! You can still give something wonderful, your time.

Offer to do a specific chore for someone, or better yet, make them a coupon or certificate you can present to them in place of a store-bought gift. Some ideas could be:

* Make a home-cooked meal
* Do a week’s worth of laundry
* Clean their house
* Wash their car
* Do an afternoon of yard work
* Baby-sit their kids

You can tailor the offer to the gift recipients needs and if you know them well, you should have a pretty good idea of what offer would be most appreciated. Have fun with it!
